An asthma attack can escalate from wheezing to a genuine airway emergency quickly. This one-hour American Red Cross Skill Boost teaches your team to recognize when someone is in respiratory distress and to help them use quick-relief medication properly.

This Skill Boost must be added to a First Aid/CPR/AED course, or you must already hold a valid First Aid and/or CPR certification.

Who this course is for

Asthma is one of the most common chronic conditions among schoolchildren, and it turns up in every workplace. The people best placed to help are the ones already in the room.

This Skill Boost is built for school and childcare staff, coaches and camp counselors, workplace first-aid responders, and any Michigan employer or organization with staff, students, or customers who have asthma.

Recognizing the signs of an asthma attack and respiratory distress
Helping a person use a metered-dose inhaler correctly
Using a spacer or valved holding chamber
Knowing when an asthma emergency requires 911
Caring for the person while waiting for EMS

Your American Red Cross digital certification is valid for two years.

Yes. Many schools and employers take all three Skill Boosts together alongside a First Aid/CPR/AED course, which certifies staff across the most common medical emergencies in a single visit.
